Racist song sheet on letterhead from ‘The Hawkeye Independent’, a newspaper from the Des Moines, Iowa, chapter. The sheet has two songs, ‘The Moo-Cow-Moo’ and ‘The Least of These’. The second song lists racial groups and says they were invented by the Devil, ‘Dago’ and ‘Sheeny’ and ‘Chink’, These are the vipers that swarm’. Also included in lot is a press photo from the trial of the Black Legion members for the ‘thrill killing’ of Silas Coleman in May 1935. The photo shows Charles Rouse with his head in his hands as he’s arraigned in July 1936. Silas Coleman lured into marshes near Pinckney, Michigan, was told to run for his life, and then shot down by members of the Black Legion ‘for the fun of it’. The Black Legion operated around the Midwest from the 1920s to the 1930s. Letter 10.25 x 8.5 inches. Photo 8.5 x 6.5 inches. Letter has minor damage and tears.
