Bronze table medallion commemorating an engagement between German and American troops at Bastogne. Obverse translated, ‘Bastogne – Old Commercial City’. Reverse translated, ‘Nuts City – Historic City’. 2.25 inches in diameter. Medallion in original case, lined in blue velveteen and cream colored sateen. 4.25 x 4.25 inches. Bastogne was held by Americans and surrounded by the XLVII Panzer Corps. On December 22, 1944, General von Luttwitz submitted a formal demand to surrender to the Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe. McAuliffe’s formal reply was, ‘To the German Commander, NUTS! The American Commander’. Damage and wear on outside of case.
