Named WWII soldier’s trench art ashtray made from a discarded MK7 50 caliber shell, engraved around the outside showing the journey of a U.S. Coast Guard in the Pacific Theater. Engraved is ‘Lt. Comdr. William Stiles USCG’ and an engraving of the USS Samuel Chase (APA-26) with ‘Magic Carpet 1945’ and a list of the ports the ship visited. Included in the list is Oahu, Ulithi, Guam, Okinawa, Yokohama, Colicon, and Mog-Mog. The inside center of the bullet has a leaf emblem and is dated 1944 on the bottom. The USS Samuel Chase was present for all five of the major U.S. amphibious invasions in the European Theater of Operations. She was then sent to the Pacific and was present for the Battle of Okinawa. She was decommissioned in May 1947 and then sold in May 1973 for scrap to Consolidated Steel Corp. for approximately $116,000. Approx. 3.75 inches in diameter.
