(1900-1945) Hitler’s private secretary and head of the Nazi Party Chancellery. Typed letter signed, Munich, Brown House, 2. April 1938, on his official letterhead as Reichsleiter and chief of staff of the deputy Fuhrer, Rudolf Hess, writing to SS-Gruppenfuhrer Walter Schmitt at the SS Personnel Main Office Reichsfuhrer SS about his missing SS membership pass: ‘My dear Herr Schmitt! I received a Schutzstaffel member stamp for April -June. This prompts me to tell you that I have not yet received an ID as a member of the SS. This is probably due to the fact that the Reichsfuhrer himself wanted to decide about my entry date in the SS.’ Signed at conclusion by Martin Bormann in black ink. In reply, Schmitt uses the verso of the letter and writes back to ‘Reichsleiter, SS-Gruppenfuhrer Bormann, Munich, Brown House’, stamped in red ink ‘7. April 1938’: ‘ Dear party comrade Bormann! I confirm your letter. Before a SS-Fuhrerausweiss can be issued, please send me three passport photos. The pictures are required for your personnel file and the identity card. Immediately after receipt your id will be sent.’ Signed by Schmitt at conclusion. Obverse bears receiving stamp from the SS-Main Office dated 4. April 1938. 9.75 x 7.75 inches, file and mailing folds, minor creases. Very good.
