WEHRPASS INFANTRY KIA IN RUSSIA
Wartime Wehrpass stamped on the cover ‘Gefallen Fuer Grossdeutchland’, issued to Oberschuetze Josef Magiera (1920 – 1942), born near Katowice, Poland. The pass was issued on 21 June 1940 in Oppeln. He was activated on 2 October 1940 with the 4./ Inf. Ers. Btl. 372 Gleiwitz. He was awarded the Iron Cross Second Class and the wound badge in black. Josef fought in France and Russia, starting with Operation Barbarossa, he had multiple injuries, he was hospitalized at Lyck, East Prussia from 30. June 1941 to 9 August 1941 for an injury of his right foot; on 13 August 1941 he was shot and took a bullet in his right upper thigh at Ratschino, Russia (Battle at Smolensk?). The final entry states that he died (at age 21) in a forest northwest of Redzy, Russia on 3 June 1942 while he was with the 7./ Jaeger Rgt 28.
