(1891 – 1944) German general field marshal, known as the Desert Fox, became the most popular general at home and gained the open respect of his enemies with his spectacular victories as commander of the Afrika Korps. Forced to commit suicide by Hitler because of his connection to the July 20 assassination attempt.
